Flood coating is when a tape’s base colour is changed before your design is printed on top. For example, white packing tape could be ‘flood coated’ to make it blue. With flood coating, your tape can potentially be more unique, more distinctive and really stand out from the crowd.
Custom tape that gets noticed
Flood coating allows you to get creative with your tape design. It can give your packaging an edge and help your brand get noticed.
Traditionally, custom tape designs are printed onto white or brown packaging tape. This gives a very clean and crisp look, but it can restrict creativity. Flood coating, on the other hand, allows you to specify the base colour, thus, allowing you to design your tape from the ground up. As a result, your packaging could be more unique and more likely to get noticed. Ultimately, a printed tape that looks like no other, could also help you stand out above your competitors.
Flood coated designs we love
Edge to edge colour. No repeat line.
Flood coating covers every inch of the tape. Unlike a similar process called reverse printing, flood coating completely blankets your tape with colour. As a result, there’s no repeat line and the colour is consistent from edge to edge.
Advantages of flood coating:
- Customise the base colour of your tape
- Be more creative in your design
- Create a more bespoke and premium look
- Help your brand get noticed and remembered
Flood coating costs little extra
Flood coating costs approximately 10% more than standard custom printed tape. Therefore, you can have a tape that offers more creativity and visual impact for only a few extra pence per roll.
Vinyl, poly and paper tapes can all be flood coated
Materials including vinyl, polypropylene and paper can all be flood coated. However, we recommend vinyl over polypropylene as it offers superior print quality. Alternatively, paper tape is an ideal option for those looking to reduce plastics.
Note: Flood coating is not suitable for designs that contain pure white. Instead, reverse printing would be recommended.

Summary
Flood coating is when a tape’s base colour is changed. For example, a traditionally white packaging tape would be blanketed edge-to-edge with a completely bespoke colour. In a separate process, an additional design would then be printed on top. In a competitive and crowded world, flood coating can help your packaging stand out.
